This tenant improvement included new offices, open work areas, artist studios, conference rooms, an employee lounge and a public museum and shop area for IDW Publishing. IDW Publishing now occupies two entire barracks buildings in San Diego’s popular Liberty Station district. Given the nature of IDW Publishing’s work, the design draws inspiration from comic strip layouts using frames and lines of sight to focus one’s attention on the high-energy, collaborative spaces. The design has created a playful environment for both visitors of the museum as well as employees, through abstracted comic book character references, color and scale. The museum area is focused around two artist studios where visitors can peer through strategically placed windows as artists work through the creative process of bringing characters and comic books to life. IDW Publishing not only serves as a large creative entity anchoring the arts and culture district at NTC, but is also a destination point, drawing large crowds and international visitors during events like Comic-Con and artist signings.
